CATDAY

International Cat Day is celebrated every year on 8 August. It was created in 2002 by the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) as a global day to raise awareness for cats — and to teach people how to help and protect them, from household companions to cats that need care in the wider community.

The idea is simple but durable: one shared date on the world calendar so shelters, rescuers, vets, and cat lovers can talk about feline welfare at the same time. Campaigns often highlight responsible ownership, health, and kinder treatment of cats everywhere.

In 2020, custodianship of the day moved to International Cat Care (iCatCare) — a British not-for-profit that has worked since 1958 to improve the health and welfare of domestic cats worldwide. Under that care, the day continues as an annual moment for education and celebration.
